|On Tuesday, 12/15/2020, we celebrate both our spring and winter commencement ceremonies virtually, something that has never been done at UNLV. The extraordinary circumstances of 2020 have called for extraordinary efforts to continue to deliver on our mission, and to celebrate our students’ successes. |
I invite you to watch the ceremonies on YouTube for both spring and winter, find college and school ceremonies online, and read about our outstanding graduates.
More than 5,000 students make up the class of 2020 – both spring and winter – with one in three grads being the first in their families to attend college. More than half are the first in their families to earn a bachelor’s degree, and 65 percent are from ethnically diverse backgrounds.
This year has been a long and winding journey, one we have undertaken with patience and resolve to keep our students on track toward their goals. We have a lot of work ahead, including maintaining our vigilance and discipline as COVID-19 continues to spread in our community.
I am certain that if we begin 2021 with the same resolve and determination we displayed through 2020, we will stay safe and healthy and carry out spring courses as we did this fall.
As difficult as these circumstances may feel for all of us, we are closer to the end of the pandemic than the beginning. I find hope in reflecting on how far we’ve come and I feel great optimism in knowing vaccines will be available soon. I look to 2021 as a year full of hope and opportunity, one that will see us continue to fulfill our mission and build a brighter future for Southern Nevada. I wish you and your loved ones a safe and healthy holiday season.
